Meditations on a Roller Set

Styrofoam heads, beads, sequins, pins, vellum, organza ribbon roses

Three heads (each 10 x 9 x 7”) on pink satin.

2006

This sculpture of three heads takes its cues from the process of a getting a “roller set”. A roller set is a weekly ritual of getting ones hair done, commonly by those who are now aging and elderly - and that has been a routine for decades. The hair is washed, set in rollers, dried, then combed out and set with hair spray. This triad of heads (the same used by those learned to be hair stylists) is a meditation on this process, as witnessed in the course of the documentation for the Parlor Project.
